Protoseq

Protoseq is an open-source MIDI sequencer and controller for Android.

This project started with a sequencer inspired by the Turing Machine Eurorack module by Tom Whitwell / Music Thing Modular, and has grown into a multi-slot MIDI sequencing environment.

Turing Machine

A random melodic sequencer inspired by classic modular probability-based sequencing. Generate evolving note patterns, lock them into repeating sequences, and shape them with range, offset, Bernoulli gates, gate length, random gate length, and MIDI CC slew.

GRID 616
A 6-track, 16-step MIDI grid sequencer built for drums and rhythmic patterns. Each track has configurable notes, length, play mode, velocity, delay, and pattern behavior. It also includes a corruption-based pattern system for creating variations from saved drum patterns.

STP 116
A melodic 16-step sequencer focused on fast sequence generation. Notes can be written manually or generated using random, Euclidean, scale-based, and seed-based tools.

Gina’s ARP
The first original sequencer prototype born inside Protoseq. Gina’s ARP explores unusual generative arpeggiation, creating patterns that can remain stable in lower registers while becoming more variable and unpredictable in higher registers.

DECKS
A dual MIDI file player for live sequencing. Load two .mid files, sync them to Protoseq’s transport, loop, reverse, jump through sections, transpose, divide the clock, remap notes, and use performance tools like Bernoulli gates and repeaters.

PCTRL
A compact MIDI controller module with sliders, buttons, and two LFOs for sending MIDI CC control directly from your Android device.

Protoseq is made for experimentation: generative melodies, drum machines, MIDI hardware, synths, DAWs, modular-inspired workflows, and strange musical accidents.

A first draft of the manual is included.
